Dr. Clive Woods

Dr. CLIVE WOODS creates successes through shrewd application of sound and tested strategies. He instinctively identifies weaknesses and errors in existing processes and proactively innovates to strengthen, correct, and improve them, bringing together multiple threads concurrently. An experienced academic leader also having impeccable Federal government credentials, he has an outstanding scholarship record inspiring respect from all his colleagues through weight of achievement and exceptional accomplishments. In addition, he is a respected voice in the Engineering profession through his leadership of professional society board-level committees focusing on ethical conduct.

As Associate Dean at the University of South Alabama (currently enrolling just over 14,000 students), in ten years Dr. Woods transformed the College of Engineering from a research backwater (research spending barely $41k/yr/faculty FTE, and having 13 PhD students) to the University’s star college performing at R1 levels (research spending almost $250k/yr/faculty FTE, 62 PhD students) while the rest of the University remains at R2 level. Sound implementation of strategies for research growth coupled with a multi-faceted vision produced a powerhouse Engineering college competing with colleges at well-known elite institutions.

Earlier, as Program Director at the National Science Foundation, Clive led U.S. collaborative research programs in all Science and Engineering fields in East Asia, and received the NSF Director’s Award for Collaborative Integration for his work leading the U.S. Federal government’s research response to earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters in Japan. Prior to that, as Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Louisiana State University, Clive led his Department to its best-ever performance in the USNews.com ranking list, from being unranked to 83rd out of 170 programs evaluated nationally just two years later, through management of underperforming faculty, aggressive publicity, and strategic concentration of limited resources towards the most cost-effective areas. The Department delivered its best performance ever under his leadership.

Top quality permeates everything Clive does. He attended Oxford University which awarded his Doctorate in Physics and also the rarely-conferred and highly prestigious Doctor of Science degree in Engineering, recognizing his distinguished research achievements over many years. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
